Sustainable fashion is a growing trend that is becoming more and more popular, but what does it mean?

When we talk about sustainable fashion we can consider 2 groups, up-cycled textiles and down-cycle textiles. Up-cycled textiles is when you modify used garments into something new, either by redesigning them or by adding adornments (adding value and style), it can also be by recycling and we'll talk more about recycling textiles in a minute. Down-cycling is when you turn used garments into cleaning cloths or used for insulation, it increases the life spam of the textile, however loses value.

Textile recycling is an important aspect of sustainable fashion. Fibre-to-fibre recycling refers to the ‘closed-loop’ recycling of textiles, where the outcome of the recycling process would be spun with virgin fibre to manufacture new clothes with recycled content. This is the process we are currently working on to bring to the UK.

Mechanical recycling of natural fibres like cotton and wool is currently the most scalable recycling technology for post-consumer textiles but the result is shorter textile fibres of a lower quality to virgin fibres.

Fibre-to-fibre textile recycling requires a constant supply of textile waste. This can either be pre-consumer waste, like factory off-cuts, or post-consumer waste. The challenge is the current lack of a wider infrastructure to collect and supply these textiles to recycling facilities.
